

Fred William Crampton, age 90, of Jackson, a "member of the greatest generation" passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013 under the loving care of his family and Allegiance Hospice. He was born on July 28, 1922, in Jackson, Michigan to Fred and Matilda (Huber) Crampton. He married Helen Rosemary Wheat on February 23, 1946 and she preceded him in death on December 8, 2005. Fred was raised in Jackson and resided here his entire life. He graduated from Jackson High School in 1941 and began working for Sheet Aluminum Corporation in Jackson. Fred entered the Marine Corps in 1942, serving four years in the Pacific as an aircraft instrument specialist. Upon discharge from the service he returned to work advancing to Foreman and General Plant Manager. The company was purchased and eventually consolidated in Lincoln Park, Michigan. Fred remained a resident of Jackson, commuted daily, and finished his career in 1979 as Superintendent. In his later years he worked at Art Moehn as a mechanic and driver. Fred had a passion for the outdoors from childhood and loved hunting and fishing. Although he rarely spoke of his military service, he spent his last few years as a member of the American Legion Post #29 enjoying the camaraderie. We thank the members. Surviving are two sons, Tom (Coleen) Crampton and Ron (Beth) Williams; nine grandchildren, Sam, Nathan, Bonnie, Carrie, Kim, Ron, Melissa, Sara and Kelli; great and great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; daughter, Kathy; granddaughter, Rebecca; great grandson, Logan and sister, Martha. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the funeral home at11:00 A.M. with visitation from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Roseland Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank the CUB Unit at Allegiance Health, Carelink of Jackson, Allegiance Hospice, Pulmonary Clinic of Southern Michigan and Allegiance Home Medical Equipment for their exceptional medical care but mostly for the personal compassion and caring for our father and grandfather.
