Of Jackson, Michigan, passed away on July 6, 2026, at the age of 81. Herbert was born in Paducah, Kentucky, on November 1, 1944, to Robert Arthel and Jennie Mae (Titsworth) Bacon. A man held in deep affection by those who knew him, Herbert carried himself with steady purpose and quiet consideration, meeting life with endurance and care for the people around him.
After high school, Herbert enlisted in the Army, serving his country with resolve. He later dedicated his working life to the State of Michigan, where he was employed at the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility as a maintenance supervisor. Through 21 years of dependable service, he earned the respect that comes from consistent effort and responsibility, retiring in 2006.
Herbert found joy in the traditions that kept him connected to home and family. He loved traveling back to Paducah every 8th of August, looking forward to those trips for months. He also treasured scrapbooks and family albums, and had recently begun building a family tree, researching genealogy with the same patient diligence that marked so much of his life. Herbert loved to dress up, yet above all else, his greatest devotion was always family.
Herbert is survived by his sons, Anthony M. Bacon and Navora “Shon” (Anne) Bacon, and stepdaughter Renata Cox; siblings Alice Juanita Bacon, Donna Kay Bacon, Del C. (Clara) Bacon, Ray L. (Leola) Bacon, and Ricky Bacon; as well as a host of loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Inez (Hawkins) Bacon; and siblings Harold E. Bacon, Robert L. Bacon, Betty J. Bacon, and Marva Sue Bacon-Bell.
Family hour will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Burden-Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home, 1806 East Michigan Ave, Jackson, MI. A Home Going Celebration will follow on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Burden-Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home, 1806 East Michigan Ave, Jackson, MI, with Reverend Benny Heady officiating.
Herbert will be laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery in Jackson, Michigan, where he will receive Military Honors.
