Larry Wayne Hammond (affectionately known as Buzz, Moose, or Tank) of Jackson, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 06, 2020, at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Cynthia “Cindy” (Bryan) Hammond; children, Heather Hammond, Amanda (Bryan) Hubbell, and Andrea (Gregory) Cronk Jr.; grandchildren, Remington and Aurora Cronk, brother James (Ann) Hammond, sister, Fae Reed (Hammond), many members of his extended family and friends. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Charles Hammond, mother, Fae Hammond, father-in-law, John Bryan, mother-in-law, Ethel Bryan, brothers, Raymond Hammond and Daniel Hammond, and granddaughter, Ella Hubbell.
Larry was born in Jackson, Michigan on May 1, 1951 to Charles and Fae (Kellicut) Hammond. He graduated from Hanover Horton High School in 1969 then went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Business Management. It was only a few short years later that his good friend and future brother-in-law Bob Sisk introduced him to the love of his life, Cindy. It was after meeting Cindy that he knew he wanted to get married and have a family so he began a job at Emmons Service as a driver. Larry and Cindy were married in late summer 1978, and throughout the years they raised a family together creating many wonderful memories. Larry left Emmons in July 1989 to begin his career as a State of Michigan Corrections Officer, a position he retired from in May 2009.
From childhood through his retirement, Larry led an active life. He played football and baseball as a child and young adult then moved on to softball, bowling, and golf as an adult and retiree. Larry shared his love of sports with his children and anyone else that showed an interest. He volunteered his time as a coach and mentor for numerous basketball, softball, and track teams that his children and others played on throughout the years. Larry also enjoyed tending his vegetable garden every summer and sharing the harvest with family, friends, and neighbors. He was an active member of Bennett Community Church where he enjoyed letting his deep singing voice boom for everyone to hear. The thing Larry loved most of all though was spending time with his family, especially his wife. Larry was always ready for a vacation or day trip with Cindy or simply sitting next to her watching a movie. Larry also loved to hear the doors of his house opening to announce the arrival of his friends or family. He especially loved to hear the stomping on the deck announcing his grandchildren had arrived for a visit.
Larry never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand or offer advice. He was a special man with a heart big enough to love everyone he met and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. The family will receive visitors at Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home (406 First Street Jackson 49201) on Sunday, December 13, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. for a memorial visitation. A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park (1425 North Elm Avenue Jackson 49202) on Monday, December 14, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date.
