Age 84, of Jackson passed away on August 28, 2018 at Allegiance Hospice Home. She was born February 12, 1934 to Blanche and John Dorff and raised in Sebring, Ohio by Helen and Arthur Trainer, her aunt and uncle. She graduated from Sebring High School in 1952 and earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mount Union College in 1956. Later that year, she married Alfred Bruey; they recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Marie touched many lives as a piano teacher and choir director, spreading the joy of music wherever she went. She taught vocal music in Shaker Heights, Ohio and sang in the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. She held positions as a choir director, music director, or organist at several churches in Shaker Heights, Lansing, and Jackson. She was also the music director at Temple Beth Israel in Jackson for many years. Marie was most recently the children’s choir director and assistant organist at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Jackson. Marie gave piano lessons for 67 years, starting at age 17. She has taught hundreds of children and adults how to sing or play piano. She was a prolific arranger of music and could arrange for any group of instruments available. Marie was a member of Jackson Tuesday Musicale and the Capital Area Music Teachers Association. She is survived by her husband, Alfred; children, Mary Helen Bruey, John (Cheryl) Bruey, and Donald (Jennifer) Bruey; grandchildren, Ann (David) Karmol, Laura (Matt) Judge, Daniel Lawton, Mark Bruey, Kevin Bruey, and Alia Bruey; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Michael Karmol. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; aunt and uncle, Helen and Arthur Trainer; brothers, John and Charles Dorff; and sister, Bonnie Lou Dorff Huskins. A visitation will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 1:30 pm. A memorial service will begin at 2:30 with a reception following immediately after. All of Marie’s former students and choir members are invited to sing or play the piano at the reception. The family wishes to thank the staff at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home for their tender care.
