Samuel James Elder

Samuel James Elder passed away in Jackson, Michigan, on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the age of 76. Born in Chickamauga, Georgia, to Samuel Elder and Mildred (Huskey) Foster on March 6, 1950, he was raised in Lansing, Michigan, lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan for most of his life, and later made Jackson his home.

Sam is survived by his daughters, Laura (Rick) LeTarte and Jennifer (Greg) Czajkowski; grandchildren, Jacob Buckland and Alayna Czajkowski; brother, Samuel Edward Huskey; and sister, Valissa (Richard) Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Crawley.

Raised in Lansing, Michigan, Sam graduated from Everett High School in 1968, carrying with him the values of diligence and responsibility that remained evident throughout his life. He served his country in the Army for two years, including time in Korea, reflecting a sense of duty and steadfast resolve.

Sam built a meaningful professional career. He worked for Jacobson’s as a buyer for women’s shoes and was promoted to Vice President of Merchandise. After retiring from Jacobson’s, he became a realtor in Ann Arbor, Michigan, helping people through important decisions about purchasing a home.

Sam valued companionship and simple pleasures, and he cherished the many friends who meant so much to him. He especially enjoyed time at Knight’s Steakhouse of Ann Arbor, where conversation and camaraderie were as important as the meal. After being commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the governor of Kentucky, he became affectionately known among friends as “the Colonel.” The Colonel also enjoyed golf and the familiar comfort of watching old westerns.

Those who knew Sam will remember his steady presence, quiet warmth, and the small, familiar moments that made time with him meaningful: conversation around a good meal, the ease of friendship, and the simple traditions he enjoyed with the people he loved.
