Thelma Taylor was born on January 26, 1934, in Grenada, Mississippi to Otis and Viola Sigers. She took her leave from this life on the morning of July 25, 2022. Thelma retired from Jackson Public Schools in the position of Custodian after 30 years of service. She loved her job. She worked at most of the schools in the Jackson area. She never hesitated to speak to any child she came in contact with, giving them advice or a listening ear. She’d put you in your place if you needed it. And you could be sure she’d ask, “Who is you?” or Who is your mother?”
After retirement she went to work cooking at a restaurant on Prospect Street. She was a faithful member of Community AME church and sang in the choir. She loved taking care of the grounds at Community AME and kept the entire church clean along with her brother Otis.
She was well known in the community. If you drove past her house on Prospect, you would more than likely see her sitting on her front steps, working on the flowers in her yard, or mowing her grass.
Thelma took care of everybody that walked in her home. You lived there when you needed to. You ate there when you were hungry. She watched the kids while you had to go to work or school.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Aldrus ‘Simon’ Ulester Taylor, her son Darrin Lester Taylor, sister Margaret Upchurch, brother, Otis Sigers, Jr., step mother Lillie Mae Sigers, sister Deborah Sigers, brother Douglas M. Lewis and parents Otis Sigers, Sr. and Viola Sigers.
The family would like to give special ‘Thanks’ to Marcia Smith; the wonderful people with Hospice at Elara Caring- especially her Caregiver Morgan, Nurse Emma and Pastor Kyle Herrick. Momma had a wonderful sitter, Amy Harvey, who always came in and pulled up a chair right next to momma’s bed. A special thanks to her two nieces, Della Daniels and Kimberly Blackwell and her granddaughter, Katrina Taylor. They didn’t hesitate to come over and help out when they were needed. She had two special men in her life- Ted Jones and Lee Jones.
Thelma will be missed. She leaves her children, Carmen (Walt) Taylor, Teri Taylor, Dianna (Eric) Taylor, Randy (Sheila) Taylor and Debra (Ronald) Guinn. Sixteen grandchildren- Christopher Taylor , Andre Stockard, Todd Stockard, Ashley Stockard, Randall Hurst, Breanna Hurst, Megan Hurst, Katrina Taylor, Marco Taylor, Darrin Taylor, Jr., Camille Harvey, Shana Taylor, Quentin Guinn, Brandon Guinn, Jennifer White, Christina Ross, and thirty Great-Grandchildren.
