Thomas William Reed

Thomas William Reed, age 85, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, in Chelsea, Michigan. He was born on December 2, 1940, in Jackson, Michigan, to Leslie M. and Blanche L. (Basnaw) Reed. Tom spent his life rooted in the values of hard work, humility, and devotion to family.

Above all else, Tom was a devoted husband to Johan (Pierce) Reed, the love of his life. Their marriage began with a sense of adventure when the two quietly eloped on October 21, 1961. It was the beginning of a lifetime built on unwavering love, partnership, and faithful commitment to one another. Tom and Johan shared 64 years of marriage and were approaching their 65th wedding anniversary.

Tom dedicated his professional life to education as a respected industrial arts teacher at Columbia Central High School. He believed deeply in the value of learning and was proud to have earned his master’s degree from Michigan State University. Throughout his career, he inspired generations of students to value craftsmanship, precision, integrity, and the satisfaction of a job well done. Following his retirement, Tom continued caring for his family’s sesquicentennial farm alongside his brother and lifelong friend, John Reed. Together, they preserved not only the land but also a way of life passed down through generations.

Tom had a lifelong passion for antique tractors and took great pride in preserving the farming heritage they represented. He taught his grandchildren the value of hard work and the importance of knowing how to work with their hands. Many of their fondest memories are of riding with Grandpa in the grain truck.

Tom had a gentle spirit that was evident to everyone who knew him. He also treasured his daily coffee hour with friends in the community, where stories were shared, laughter was plentiful, and lifelong friendships were strengthened.

Throughout his life, Tom faithfully served the community that meant so much to him. He contributed his time, knowledge, and steady leadership to numerous boards and was actively involved with the Hanover-Horton Area Historical Society.

Hanover-Horton, where Tom attended school from kindergarten through 12th grade and later built his life and raised his family, always held a special place in his heart. He was proud of his community and continually looked for positive ways to support its people, preserve its history, and help ensure its traditions would be carried forward for future generations.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Johan Reed; his daughter, Sally (Charles) Clark; his grandchildren, Stacey (J.R.) Hernandez, Thomas (Katie) Reed, Paige (Michael) Rudolph, and Jacob (Jesse) Reed; his great-grandchildren, Joe, Leslie, Reed, Abigail, Emilia, Eleanor, Kaelee, Analiz, and Xania; his brother, John (Sue) Reed; and many extended family members, former students, neighbors, and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark Reed, whose recent passing left an immeasurable void in the family. The family was still deeply grieving this loss at the time of Tom’s passing and now carries the profound sorrow of losing both father and son within such a short time while holding close the love and memories they shared. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Blanche Reed; his sister Donna and her husband, Dean Tribby; his sister Joann and her husband, Ken Martin; his sister Jeanne Sprague; his sister Phyllis Mead and her husband, Walter Mead; and several nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members.

His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the family he loved, the farm he helped preserve, the community he faithfully served, and the countless memories that will continue to bring smiles for generations to come.

A Celebration of Life honoring Tom will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Hanover-Horton Historical Heritage Park Event Center, 121 Teft Street, Hanover, Michigan 49241. Guests are warmly invited to join the family for a luncheon following a few words and shared memories of Tom. There will also be an opportunity for guests to share stories with everyone gathered.
