Dr. Alan Robert “Bobby” Romans, 81, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away peacefully at home on August 8, 2022 surrounded by family. He was born September 9, 1940 to William A. and Camille J. Romans in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Bobby received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Tennessee (Memphis). After serving as Lieutenant Commander in the Navy at Camp Pendleton, CA, Bobby received a Master of Science in Periodontics from The Ohio State University. Jacksonville became home in 1972, and “Dr. Gum” went into private practice from 1974 until retirement in 2011. He was a member of Rotary International, past President of Jacksonville’s Sports & Entertainment Commission, provided dental care to the Sulzbacher dental clinics, and gave generously of his time to many other causes. Prior to his stroke in 2011, he was a regular member of Holy Family Catholic Church, including their Men’s Club. Bobby was an eager fan of the LSU Tigers, and served as the Vice President of Jacksonville’s Alumni Chapter. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, with a passion for free-diving. For 10 years, the Brooks YMCA was instrumental in Bobby’s post-stroke care. In addition, his family wants to extend love and heartfelt thanks to Immacula who was dedicated and loving for over 11 years. “GrandBob” was a devoted grandfather and father who will be missed dearly. Predeceased by his son, Robert Alexander Romans, he is survived by daughters Dustin Van Antwerp (Donald), Barron Romans, and Alana “Robbe” Romans (Adam Ross); sisters Patricia Rokoske (Thomas) and Tamara Stresau (Michael); and 5 grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00pm on September 10, 2022 at Holy Family, 9800 Baymeadows Rd. in Jacksonville followed by a reception and celebration of his life in the parish hall.
