LTJG (Ret) Charles (Chuck) E. Ellis, 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 10, 2014. He was the son of the late Edwin and Morena Ellis, born on Cape Cod October 21, 1922. After graduating high school, Chuck enlisted in the United States Navy.
He was assigned to the USS Pennsylvania during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Following that, he went to military flight school and boarded the USS Wilkes Barre where he was responsible for several successful search and rescue missions. He was also in Tokyo Harbor during the emperor's surrender. He was stationed in places such as Rhode Island, Virginia, Maryland, Cuba, California, and Ecuador. While stationed in Alameda, CA Chuck flew a helicopter to the “North Pole” to pick up Santa Claus and bring him back to the base to the delight of the military children for a Christmas visit.
After his retirement from active military service, he flew charter planes throughout the Bahamas. He then piloted executive planes for Food Fair and Pantry Pride in Florida. He started running at age 62 5k and other races for 23 years in the Jacksonville vicinity.
Until his death, he was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Fleet Reserve Member, and active in neighborhood community and his church.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Audrey C. Ellis.
The Ellis’ lived in Hollywood, Florida from 1962 to 1974 then made the Jacksonville/Ponte Vedra Beach area their home from 1974 to the present.
He leaves to behind a brother on Cape Cod, two daughters, Jane Duncan of St. Augustine Fl. And Bonnie B. Wissink of Gaithersburg MD., 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Nov. 22, 2014 at 11am at Hope Community Church 1710 Kernan Blvd N, Jacksonville, FL 32225. (904) 646-0559
