Christy Vlahos Bromberg

Christy was born in Birmingham, Alabama on March 12, 1958. Christy and her husband, Clayton, met when they were both students at Mountain Brook Elementary School and were married for 46 years. Christy attended Hollins University for two years before transferring to The University of Alabama, where she received a degree in political science in 1980. At Alabama, Christy was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Christy and Clayton moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1980 following Bromberg and Company's purchase of Underwood Jewelers. Christy quickly gained many lifelong friends that she loved fiercely and remained close with until her passing. She served as the head gift buyer at Underwood's for many years.

Christy gave generously of both her time and resources to the community in Jacksonville. She served as President of the Jacksonville chapter of The University of Alabama Alumni Association, on the Executive Committee of Wolfson Children's Hospital Women's Board, as a member of the Junior League of Jacksonville, and as a board member of Jacksonville chapter of Children's Home Society.

Christy was one-of-a-kind. As her mother is fond of saying "God broke the mold when He made Christy." Her joie de vivre, upbeat personality, and optimism brightened every room she entered and was contagious. Throughout her life, Christy never met a stranger-she was gregarious and sincerely interested in other people. She was exceptionally genuine-she "told it like it was." Christy made entertaining and cooking an art and was an unparalleled hostess of celebrations both small and large. She was incredibly loyal and was the best person to have on your side. She loved cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide, traveling with her family to jewelry industry events, collecting objets d'art, watching sports of any kind, listening to rock and roll music, fishing with Captain Jeremy Alvarez, hosting friends and family at her beach condominium, and enjoying the occasional Bloody Mary or Johnny Walker Black.

Christy's loyalty, leadership, over-the-top generosity, and compassion made her the backbone of her family. Christy loved her children fiercely. She was so proud of her son Clayton, and of her daughter Zoe, who passed away tragically in 2011. The family takes comfort in the fact that Christy is now reunited with her cherished daughter. Christy adored spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren, Zoe and Charlie. Her larger-than-life presence will be missed beyond words.

Christy was preceded in death by her father Leon Chris Vlahos, stepmother Myrna Malone Vlahos, daughter Zoe Proferis Bromberg, and brother-in-law Frederick Wilkinson "Ricky" Bromberg.

Christy is survived by her husband, Charles Clayton Bromberg of Jacksonville, Florida, her son Charles Clayton Bromberg, Jr. (Robin) of Birmingham, Alabama, and grandchildren, Zoë Dylan Bromberg and Charles "Charlie" Clayton Bromberg III of Birmingham, Alabama. She is also survived by her parents, Zoe Proferis Cassimus and Marcus Spiro Cassimus, her sister, Cleo O'Neal, and her brother, John Marcus Cassimus (Lexi), all of Birmingham, Alabama. Christy is also survived by her sister Stephanie Leigh Vlahos of Clarksville, Tennessee, her brother Chris Leon Vlahos of Nashville, Tennessee, her sister Courtney Vlahos Smith (Bryan) of Memphis, Tennessee, her brother-in-law, Frank Hardy Bromberg, III, her sisters-in-law, Nancy Beaird Bromberg and Lella Bromberg Wilbanks (Bruce), her nieces and nephews, Henry Craft O'Neal Jr. (Lauren), John Kirkman O'Neal (Cassie), Edward Asbury O'Neal, Michael Anne Dixon, Frederick "Wil" Wilkinson Bromberg, Jr. (Katie), Anne Hayden Orme (Michael), Margaret ("Mallie") Bromberg Cole (Jack), Frances Hardy Bromberg, Bruce ("Bo") Ogletree Wilbanks, Jr., and Alice Kirkland Wilbanks, as well as numerous cousins, great nieces and nephews, and other family members and friends whom she loved dearly.

A service to celebrate Christy's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, with a reception immediately following the service at the Florida Yacht Club. Everyone attending is encouraged to wear crimson.
