Our family lost our dear mother, friend, confidant, grandmother and aunt. Evelyn Scott Millen, 96, passed away in her home after an extended battle with Parkinson’s disease. Evelyn was the last of that generation in her family that was born in the first part of the Twentieth Century and lived to see this country develop from small rural communities into the world as we know it today.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry E. Millen, son, Paul E. Dozier, brother, J. Harold Scott, sisters Elva Scott McLean, Marjorie Scott Bailey, and baby sister Catherine Scott who died as an infant. She was the daughter of Etta Gregory Scott and James Millard Scott. She is survived by daughter Sandra Etta Bertoglio (husband Jack), son Harold Millen (wife Joy), granddaughter Michelle Dozier (Jason), grandsons, Austin and Allen Millen and several nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Evelyn was born and raised in the small town of Goshen, Alabama. She went through the Great Depression of 1929, and was part of the generation known as The Greatest Generation. She lived in Rocky Mount, NC during World War II, marrying her husband after he returned from duty as a Marine serving in the Pacific. From there they moved to Jacksonville, FL, and later to Jacksonville Beach where she lived for over sixty years. She was active in the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach, a Cub Scout leader, a talented seamstress, crafter, artist, and gardener. She was involved in the activities of her children in and out of school, and was always such a fun person. She knew how to work hard and how to play hard, and had a great wry sense of humor. The thing she often said in times of difficulty that we will remember forever was “You do what you have to do”. Period. No whining, no complaining.
She had loving care for many years from a wonderful team of caregivers ending up with Katherine Bowen, Clara Carrasquillo, Maxine Chaney, Marilyn Collins, and Monika Siposova. The last few days were spent under the care of Community Hospice who were so very kind and attentive to Evelyn and the family as well. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
The service will be Sunday, January 25th at 2 P.M. at Hardage Giddens, 1701 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
