George Locklear

Mr. George Locklear, 91, a long-time resident of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away Friday morning, July 19, 2013 at his assisted living facility, “Some Place Like Home”. Mr. Locklear was born in Fairmont, North Carolina on February 21, 1922 to Flagley and Rose Locklear and was the valedictorian of his 1940 Fairmont Indian High School graduating class.

He spent more than 30 years in the United States Air Force serving in World War II, the Korean War, and briefly in Viet Nam, retiring in 1972 as Chief Master Sergeant. Following his military career, his was a dedicated employee in the hardware departments of Pick’n Save and the Mayport Naval Base Exchange. George can be described as a kind, gentle, and humble man who loved golf, children, playing cards and reading his King James Bible almost every night.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Helen of more than 64 years, and 2 sons, DeWayne and George Kelly. He is survived by 3 daughters, Linda of Valley Center, California, Diantha of Aurora, Colorado, Marion of Fernandina Beach, Florida, along with 8 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

The family requests any and all donations to be sent either to “Some Place Like Home”, 3930 Novaline Lane, Jacksonville, FL 32277, or to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 for their dedicated service and compassionate care for George.

According to his wishes, there will be a simple memorial service at the Jacksonville National Cemetery in early September, 2013, for his family and friends.
