while under the care of Hospice. He was born in Jacksonville, FL, on May 27, 1949 to Julian and Jean Johnson and lived his entire life in the Jacksonville area and the beaches. He married his high school sweetheart, Karen Simon. They were both in the Bishop Kenny Class of 1967 and both graduated four years later from Jacksonville University where Glenn was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years, Karen; his brother Julian Jr., and sister Karyn Hunt. He is survived by daughters Dana Johnson and Katie Mattox (Josh); granddaughters Blake Bryant and Olivia Mattox; grandson Elliot Mattox; brothers Robbie (Louise) Johnson and Gregory (Jennie) Johnson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
After graduating from JU and working 6 years managing heavy construction projects in the family paving company, Julian E. Johnson & Sons, Glenn founded and co-owned a separate construction company, Johnson Enterprises of Jacksonville, with his brother Robbie. It grew to become one of the largest and most sought-after construction companies specializing only in construction of underground and above ground cable TV systems throughout the United States for major cable television companies.
Then, after about 10 years, Glenn decided to retire and teach high school. He got a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and taught at Wolfson HS then at Fletcher HS with Karen. When Karen was ready to retire after 30 plus years of teaching, he joined her, and they celebrated retirement together. Their retirement years were spent traveling throughout the States in their RV. They both loved the RV life as they traveled and explored most of the States including driving as far as you can drive in Alaska while towing a Pathfinder. Throughout that time, they made friends and stayed in touch with many RV'ers around the country.
Glenn was a proud and loving husband, father and grandfather Poppy. He also loved and was comforted by Dana's 3 beautiful poodles who always found a way to crawl up into his lap or lay beside him in bed. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life for Glenn and Karen will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 11:00 am at Beaches Chapel, Hardage-Giddens, 1701 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250, with Father John Reynolds as Celebrant.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to The Fund for Bishop Kenny High School, 1055 Kingman Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
