James Cagnassola, Jr. was born December 1, 1936, in Westfield New Jersey. He served in the US Navy from 1954 to 1957 and in 1960 was awarded a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey.
Jim entered on duty with the FBI as a Special Agent in July 1963. He subsequently served in the Kansas City Missouri office from October 1964 to September 1966 when he transferred to Los Angeles, California. In August 1975 he transferred to FBI headquarters to assume supervisory duties in the Inspection Division.
Mr. Cagnassola was made Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Indianapolis, Indiana office in March 1978. In March 1980 he was promoted to the rank of Inspector and returned to the Inspection Division at FBI headquarters. In September 1980 he was designated Special Agent in Charge of the New Rochelle, New York FBI office. He was named Special Agent in Charge of New York City’s Administration Division in July 1981.
In July 1982 he was named Special Agent in Charge of the Newark New Jersey FBI office. In May 1985 Mr. Cagnassola was designated Special Agent in Charge of the Jacksonville, Florida FBI office where he remained until his retirement.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Ann and Catherine. He is survived by his loving wife Pat of 63 years and his four children. Greg (Carrie), David (Cleary), Suzanne (Jason) and Mark (Micah), his seven grandchildren: Drew, Jack, Tommy, Will, Matt, Nick and Hank, his brother Frank, and his sister Claudia.
A memorial mass for James will be held Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 12:00 PM at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 523 Pablo Avenue, Jacksonville Beach, FL.
