Janice Layman died at the age of 97 at Life Care Center in Jacksonville, Florida on September 27. She had been a Jacksonville resident since 1969 when she and her husband, Jack, moved to Florida following Jack's retirement from the Air Force. Janice was preceded in death by Jack (after 70 years of marriage), their son, John, a son-in¬law, Bob Glover, and a grand daughter-in-law, Wendy Holland. Janice's remaining children are Mary Janice Glover and Joan Holland (Jerry). Her grandchildren are Christy Bowen (Michael), Lori Holland (Sam Thomas), Andy Lewis and Eric Holland. Great grandchildren are Zach Thoma (Taylor}, Michael Bowen (Kylie), Jake, Dalton and Cody Holland. Great-great grandchildren are Aubrie and Brody Bowen. She is survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.
Janice was born in Galesburg, Illinois and spent much of her early life in Illinois, Colorado and Nebraska. After Janice met and married Jack-who was a USAF pilot-¬the family moved often and lived in many states and in France and Germany. In addition to being a military spouse and mother of 3 energetic children, Janice became an accomplished cook and expert baker. She enjoyed playing Bridge and reading and she was an avid Jeopardy fan. Janice was a longtime member of Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church where she enjoyed helping cook for events. She also enjoyed the friends she made at church. At home, Janice enjoyed the meals she prepared for special dinners and the birthday cakes she decorated for kids and grandkids. In her later years Janice lived at Taylor Homes and later, Camellia. Her final home was at Life Care Center. She felt like part of that community and wanted "no more moves."
Her family members are left with a lifetime of special memories, many of which will be of Janice's sense of humor. She laughed loudest when laughing at herself. Janice will be interred with Jack at the National Cemetery after a graveside ceremony with her family. When she was asked about words for her headstone, she asked if it could boast a little that she was a good cook.
In-lieu of Flowers, Janice's family ask that you consider your favorite charity, or Community Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeast FL, or that you give extra hugs to family and friends. MJ is also a supporter of Wreaths Across America with the Ponte Vedra DAR where $17.00 will purchase a Christmas wreath for a national cemetery.
