She was born in Ludowici, Georgia on April 18, 1931, the daughter of James Edgar Parker and Lemma Victoria Wells Parker of that city. Joanna graduated from Mercer University with a degree in Education and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. After graduation she taught school in Frankfurt, Germany and Georgia. After moving to Jacksonville, she taught in several locations during which she met and married an attorney, William C. Guthrie, Jr. That marriage lasted 64 years until terminated by her death. She was a member of South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church and very active in its Women of the Church and Naomi/Ruth Circle.
In addition to her husband, Joanna is survived by her three children: William C. Guthrie III
(wife, Stephanie); Angela Guthrie Barber, previously Stone; Kristina Guthrie, previously Allaben; seven grandchildren: William C. Guthrie IV; Stephen Hunter Guthrie (wife, Meredith); Howard Andrew Guthrie (wife, Bridget); Eric Lee Stone (wife, Jordan); Kevin Edward Stone; Kathryn Allaben Jordan (husband, Garrett) and Derk Lee Allaben, Jr; and three great grandchildren: Rowan Stone, Aria Guthrie and Adaline Guthrie.
Joanna was predeceased by her sister, Mary Ida Tatum and her husband, Ryle William Tatum, Statesboro, Georgia; brother, James Edgar (Jimmy) Parker, III, Ludowici, Georgia; and survived by Jimmy’s wife, Ann Eubanks Parker along with numerous nieces and nephews.
