Joseph Ralph Vona, 78, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016, peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on January 30, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida to Joseph Sebastian Vona and Jennie Louise Bianca Vona. He was born into a big Italian family who affectionately called him Joe Ralphie. He and his sister Mary Angela grew up in Jacksonville Beach close to their grandparents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Like any good Italian family they loved to get together, fellowship, and eat. He had many fond memories of his childhood and he enjoyed telling stories of those years.
Joe attended Duncan U. Fletcher High School and graduated in 1956. He started working at a young age and grew accustom to hard work. He worked for a short time on his uncle’s shrimp boat in Mayport and then with the Corp of Engineers, but most of his life he was a carpenter by trade. Joe moved to Palm Valley where he lived for over 30 years. He cleared the land and built a home there for his family. He was a good provider and even after he retired he never quit working. He was always making or building something. He later lived in St. Augustine for over 10 years.
Joe enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was in the woods, fishing, playing golf with friends, camping, hunting with his cousins, or just burning yard debris. He was happy when he had a fire going in the yard and a machete in his hand.
The thing that Joe loved the most was his family. There is nothing that he enjoyed more than spending time with his family. He always looked forward to family dinners and functions. His children and grandchildren brought him great joy!
Joe leaves behind his children, Sonia (Les) Ricca, Joseph M. Vona, Lisa (Marc) Mickler, Tony (Kim) Vona, Aaron (Whitney)Vona; grandchildren, Ciara (Kevin), Brooklyn, Ashley (Toren), Marcus (Rebekah), Callie, Brenton, Trey, Christian, Gatlin, Jay, and Ella; great-grandchildren, Abbigail ,Kaden, Konnor, and Aisley and many cousins and friends.
