Captain Larry James Pickett, United States Navy (Retired), born June 11, 1939, passed away peacefully at his home on February 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. A proud native of Jacksonville, he grew up in the Pickettville area on the city’s north side. He was the son of Ira James Pickett and Bertlelee Johns Pickett, whose values of hard work, determination, and family shaped the man he would become.
Larry was the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University and later a Master of Science degree from Central Michigan University. He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy and went on to earn his wings as a Naval Aviator, beginning a distinguished career that would span three decades of service to his country.
Behind Larry’s decades of service was the unwavering support of his wife of 66 years, Patricia Pickett. As a Navy wife, Pat dedicated countless volunteer hours supporting the Navy community while also raising their children during the many demands and relocations of military life. Her strength, sacrifice, and commitment played an essential role in Larry’s career, and she took great pride in the recognition and respect he earned throughout his service.
Above all else, Larry cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who took great pride in the people he loved.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Pat Pickett; his daughter, Pamela Pickett; his granddaughter, Savannah Vanderhorst; his grandson, Christopher Vanderhorst; and his great-grandson, Adrian Torres. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Pickett Moffit; his niece, Amy Pickett Dahl; his nephew, Eric Dahl; and his great-nephew, Owen Wood.
He was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence Kyle Pickett.
