Paul Gustav Zander of Jacksonville Florida, formerly of Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, died peacefully at Northeast Florida Community Hospice on January 2, 2016 in Jacksonville Florida at the age of 92.
Paul is survived by his children, one son, Gilmer Woodrow Cloer, Jr., of Yankeetown, Fla., two daughters, Cassie Cloer Norvell (Forrest) of Charleston, SC, and Midge Cloer Lilly (Stewart) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; one sister Angie Z. Robertson of Beaufort, SC; seven grandchildren, Courtney Cloer Platz-Thompson of Atlanta, Ga., Margo Cloer Gramling of Atlanta, Ga., Melissa Cloer Williams of Raleigh, NC, Forrest Henson Norvell IV (Meghan) of Charleston, SC, Ronson Winchester Cloer of Gulf Breeze, Fla., William Austin Norvell of North Charleston, SC, and Travis Woodrow Norvell (Erin) of Atlanta, GA; seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Margie Fitzgerald Zander, and is preceded in death by seven siblings.
Paul was born on August 17, 1923 in Charleston, SC, a son of the late Charles Henry Zander and Angie Johnson Zander. He joined the US Navy at the age of 17 and served during World War II and the Korean War. Later, as a Merchant Marine Seaman, he traveled the world before returning to Charleston to work in civil service at the Charleston Air Force Base. During his retirement years, he was a mainstay at the Sullivan’s Island Fire Department, where he enjoyed years of further service to his community and many great friendships. Paul loved music and was passionate about collecting music reel-to-reel tapes. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 129 and the Masonic Fort Moultrie Lodge 428. Also, he was a member of VFW Post 3270.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 10:00am at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
