

RAYMOND D. SALMAN, Ed.D., M.D. or Dr Ray as he liked to be called, died on 6-26-2011 after an extended illness. He was born on 10-10-1926 in Brooklyn, NY. He had a long and distinguished career as an educator at Bowman-Gray Medical School in NC followed by serving as a psychologist in the prison and school systems in NY. He then went to the NY State Education Dept. At the Department he first had oversight of NY school psychologists. He then became the Executive Secretary for Psychology and later transferred to the position of Director of Professional Licensing where, with a staff of over 100, he directed and coordinated the implementation of licensing laws for over 30 professions including medicine, dentistry, nursing,
pharmacy and psychology.
He retired from this position and went to work for St Georges University School of Medicine in Grenada, BWI where he was the Administrative Provost for over 20 years. He earned academic degrees from Long Island University, NY University, and State University of NY at Albany from which he received his doctoral degree. He also was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from St Georges University when he retired. In his retirement, he was appointed to numerous national, state and local committees. He also was very active in the community with the homeowners association.
Dr Ray is survived by his wife of 35 years, Dr Barbara Pieta Salman; daughters Kathryn Birchen of Okemos, MI & Barbara Hasselbach (Ken) of Glenmont, NY; son Ted Salman of Lansing, MI; granddaughters Heather (Ken), Jennifer (Kurt), Terressa & Kelley; grandson Andrew; great grandchildren Tegan & Lailah.
The family wishes to thank all the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living, especially those who work on the Reminiscence (Memory Care) Unit and the health care team. They have been particularly patient, kind, understanding, loving, gentle & tender in the care provided. We are also grateful to staff from In-Home Care who ministered to him during his last hours; to support provided by Heartland Hospice staff; and to Dr Brian Stephens and his staff for their care, support, kindness, responsiveness and compassion.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 30th at 10:00 am at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church on Beach Blvd. with Fr. Msgr. Vincent Haut as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Beaches Memorial Park. A memorial service will be planned for a later date at Sunrise Assisted Living on Belfort Road.
