It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Rebecca Callaway Lacour passed away peacefully, with her family by her side on March 19, 2024 at the age of 82. Becky’s legacy will endure through the countless stories and cherished memories that will forever reside in the hearts of all who knew her.
Becky was born on July 30, 1941 to Paul and Rachel Verner in their home in Gratis, Georgia. The community was small and typical for that era, with nearly all its members being connected to her either through her mother or father. From a young age, Becky exhibited a remarkable spirit and knew she was destined for bigger things. She went to Gratis Grammar School, a one room schoolhouse through 6th grade. Her parents paid $65 to get her into Monroe Junior High School. Upon entering, she immediately joined the Monroe Girls Drum and Bugle Corps which played a tremendous role throughout her entire life. The all-female Monroe Girls Drum and Bugle Corps took her on many adventures. She performed and competed in Chicago, Miami, and marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for several years. She could still pick up the sticks and would amaze you with her skills into her 70s.
She caught the eye of Larry Callaway of Covington, Georgia. They had two wonderful boys together, Andy and Barry. In the 60s, accompanied by her sons, she moved to Jacksonville, Florida with no car and very little money. And yet, she thrived.
Throughout her life, Becky touched the lives of many. Whether it was through her highly successful telecommunications career, active lifestyle, or vigorous social life, she approached every opportunity with enthusiasm. She traveled the world with her granddaughter and her dear friends. Becky was an avid reader, master gardener, fabulous cook, and an accomplished seamstress. She thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, even learning how to play tennis and ski in her prime, and she was quite good at both. She was fearless and she was beautiful.
Becky will be remembered for her zest for life, strength, perseverance, and the warmth of her smile. She is survived by her husband Sep Lacour, Barry and Joette Callaway, Andy Callaway, Lindsey Callaway, Jim and Paulette Monaghan, and her wonderful circle of friends who all mourn her loss deeply. Let us remember Becky with fondness and gratitude for the time we were privileged to spend with her.
A celebration of Life will be held on April 28, 2024, at 2pm, at the Hidden Hills Country Club. Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her name to The Foundation of Community Hospice & Palliative Care.
May Becky rest in eternal peace, knowing that she is dearly loved and will never be forgotten. Arrangements are entrusted to Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach, FL.
