A lifelong resident of Jacksonville, he is survived by his wife of 54 years Faith Louise Perkinson Mansell; son, Michael Mansell (wife- Jill Mansell); daughter, Robin; grandchildren, Benjamin Thomas (wife- Raney Thomas), Alexander Thomas, and Bonnie Hildebrand (wife- Leanna Hildebrand); great grandson, Tucker Thomas, who we all agree was the apple of his eye; and nieces, Cindy Powell, and Glenda Powell Langford (husband- David Langford).
Following his service in the US Navy as a medic, he enjoyed a 45 year career with JEA. After retiring he pursued his passion for nature photography. Some of his best memories were made with his friends in the wilds of Florida, Arizona, and Mexico. From tagging crocodiles, photographing bats, or crawling through caves searching for rare salamanders, he found beauty in animals and places that most of us never see. His photography was published in books, magazines, such as Ranger Rick, and decorates the walls of our homes.
His greatest love was his family. He was always a ”hands-on” Papa, who constantly dreamed up new toys, games and silly songs. He loved to set up his big camouflage tent in the living room and have Tucker sleep over. From many trips to the beach, fishing in ponds, and trying to surf, he generously poured time and creativity into his children. As the grandchildren became adults, he made sure each of our yards had great bird feeders and blue-bird boxes, and kept us stocked with suet and seed, always interested to know what we had seen at our feeders lately. In his extra time he also enjoyed playing billiards and watching his friends in tournaments over the years.
He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers we invite you to consider a donation to Pine Castle of Jacksonville or Sylvan Heights Bird Park in honor of his memory.
