Born on January 12, 1965, Carl lived a life defined by service, faith, adventure, and devotion to family. A proud graduate of Trinity Christian Academy's Class of 1983, Carl answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Corporal. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to protecting and serving others through a distinguished career with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Carl faithfully served his community for 27 years before retiring as a patrolman in 2017.
Carl never met a road trip he didn't want to take. Whether planned weeks in advance or sparked by a moment's notice, he was always ready for an adventure. He found great joy in traveling, scuba diving, and spending time with animals. He was happiest when surrounded by family, especially during gatherings filled with laughter, stories, and cherished memories.
A man of deep faith, Carl's relationship with God guided him throughout his life. He possessed a lifelong passion for history, particularly the Civil War, and could often be found sharing stories and knowledge with those around him. His curiosity, sense of humor, and unwavering loyalty left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He had a talent for picking on those he loved most. If he teased you relentlessly, you could be sure you held a special place in his heart, whether he admitted it or not. His teasing nature, quick wit, and sense of humor will be remembered just as fondly as his strength and resilience by those who were closest to him.
Carl was preceded in death by his loving parents, Roe and Dana Shepherd.
He is survived by his children, Amanda Sztroin (Sonny), Pauline Shepherd (Garrett), Alexander Shepherd, and Cecelia "Hope" Shepherd; his beloved grandchildren, Trinity, Logan, and Jace; his faithful girlfriend of 12 years, Lisa Beasley; his sisters, Dana Shepherd (Bryan) and Angie Shepherd; and his nieces, Loni, Lindsey, Danielle, Bryanna, and Raeann, along with his great-niece, Roewan. Carl loved his nieces and great-niece as though they were his own daughters, earning him the treasured nickname "Uncle-Daddy," a title he carried with pride and love.
Carl's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, Marine, law enforcement officer, and man of faith. He will be remembered for his servant's heart, adventurous spirit, steadfast faith, and the deep love he showed his family. Though he will be profoundly missed, his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
