

Carla Pihl Thigpenn, 91, died at Taylor Care Facility, Jacksonville, FL, 11:50 p.m. 29 Jan 2018. She was born to Carl Magnus Pihl and Arline Frances Maxwell along with her twin sister, Arline Pihl, on 2 Sep 1926, at the home of her great-grand mother, in Malden, MA.
The children’s parents were traveling to their summer home in Derry, New Hampshire. Fortunately, their family physician was traveling with them, and shortly thereafter, they continued on to New Hampshire.
At the age of 2, the family relocated to Jacksonville, FL, where Carla remained until the age of 19 yrs of age. After graduating from Robert E. Lee Senior High School, she married James Alfred Thigpenn, III, and they moved to Canada as he was an American that had served in the Canadian Armed Forces. They travelled for the next five years in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Sarasota, Tampa and finally Sante Fe, New Mexico and back to Jacksonville, FL. During her journeys, Carla completed an I.C.S. Correspondence course in Aeronautical Engineering.
They had four boys within five years: James Alfred, IV, Murphey Maxwell, John Stone, and Arlin Pihl Thigpenn. She was happily married as a Homemaker for the next 48 years until James Alfred Thigpenn, III, passed away. Carla stayed at the same family home in Arlington until she moved to Taylor Manor in the Southside.
Carla was a Charter Member of the Arlington Presbyterian Church and was ordained as an Elder quite some time ago. Every Office in the Women of the Church had been her privilege to serve in, and she, also, sang for years in the choir. Upon moving to the Southside, she joined the Lakewood Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir there as well.
Carla enjoyed needle work and other crafts for which she won several prizes.
She was predeceased by her husband and sons Arlin Pihl Thigpen (1975) and James Alfred Thigpenn (2014).
Survivors include sons, Murphey Maxwell Thigpenn (Jenny) and John Stone Thigpenn; Nine Grandchildren also survive.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 03, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St. Johns Bluff Road N. Jacksonville, FL 32225.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, February 04, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St. Johns Bluff Road N. Jacksonville, FL 32225. Interment will follow in Chapel Hills Memory Gardens.
