Erica’s and Melody’s kindness and generosity throughout Carole’s illness will forever be appreciated by Carole’s brother. Carole will also be greatly missed by the many colleagues with whom she worked at the Florida Times-Union. Several became her close personal friends.
Carole was born in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Stephen T. Mather H.S. and was a National Honor Society member. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree at Drake University and completed her master’s degree in Journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia. After starting her career in Anderson, SC, Carole moved to Jacksonville in 1979 to join the Florida Times-Union, where she spent 38 rewarding years. Carole was a trend-setter as one of the only female sports desk editors in the country. She worked in several departments at the paper and became Assistant Deputy Managing Editor, as well as business and international news editor, and various other assignments. Carole was celebrated by her colleagues as a great boss, mentor, talented journalist and friend. Alumni of the Times-Union posted over a hundred comments on their Facebook page upon learning of her being placed on life support and her subsequent passing that she was immensely dedicated to her craft, was kind, intolerant of mediocrity yet always positive and supportive of the reporters, and was respected, appreciated and loved by her co-workers. Carole enjoyed playing golf, competing along with Greg and her trivia team at the local restaurants, often winning. Carole was an avid pet lover and owner, a very serious sports fan, but most passionately of the Jacksonville Jaguars as an original season ticket holder. She just always loved going to all the games, win or lose. Carole was humble, generous of heart and everyone who knew her will miss her immensely.
A graveside service for Carole will be held Thursday, December 2, 2021at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.
