The story of CHARLES THOMAS BUNDY is one worth knowing. Charles used the power and beauty of storytelling in every facet of his life. He was a loving, wise friend and teacher as well as a loving husband, Dad, and Papa. He passed away on Saturday, July 3rd, 2021, surrounded by family in Jacksonville, Florida. He was 88.
Charles (Tom) was born July 8, 1932 in Hamlet, North Carolina to Corneilious Kollocks Bundy, Sr. and Lena Belle Gibson Bundy and was the fourth of four children: Elizabeth Leona Smith, Corneilious Kollocks Bundy, Jr., and William Jackson Bundy. He was a devoted son and brother.
Charles married his loving wife, Florita Mae Hodges Bundy, almost 60 years ago on November 23, 1961 at Beaver Street Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He lived on just a few months after her passing on April 28, 2021. With Florita at his side, Charles faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon at Beaver Street Baptist Church, Jacksonville Baptist Temple, and First Coast Baptist Church. He taught children, teens, college students, married couples, and senior adults for over 65 years. Together, he and Florita joyfully shared their devotion and love for Jesus Christ, touching countless lives. They had two sons, Joel Thomas Bundy and Andrew Charles Bundy.
Charles worked as an electronics technician at Sears, Roebuck & Company for over 45 years. He was also the family historian, rarely seen without his Nikon in hand. Charles captured thousands of photos and portraits throughout the years, and his meticulous, careful documentation will serve as a treasured timestamp for generations to come. He was a voracious reader, and his love for storytelling showed in almost every interaction he had, whether he was sharing the word of Christ or recounting an anecdote from childhood. His memory served him well his entire life, and he loved hearing others’ stories as much as he loved sharing his own. Charles’ curiosity for the world and those around him came second only to his love for them both.
He enjoyed traveling with Florita, with trips to England, Israel, Alaska, Peru, and the Caribbean among their many adventures. He traveled to the Smoky Mountains regularly with his wife and sons and loved attending family reunions in North Carolina. He was a gentle and caring Papa to his nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. From him, they learned about the love of Jesus and the value of a hard day’s work. They also inherited his cache of tremendous dad jokes, riddles, and rhymes, which will not soon be forgotten.
His surviving family includes his son, Joel Bundy (Virginia Beach) and his wife Susan; his son Andrew Bundy (Cocoa) and his wife Sandie; his sister Elizabeth Smith (Seneca); and his grandchildren: Jonathan Bundy (Jacksonville), his wife Alicia, and their daughter Olivia; Jennifer Kanji (Jacksonville) and her husband Jatin; Jamison Bundy (Jacksonville), his wife Lauren and their children Lilah, Amelia, and Jack; Jacob Bundy (Camarillo), his wife Liz, and their daughter Jacqueline; Devin Rowell (Queensland); Timothy Bundy (Lancaster) and his wife Jennifer; Lauren Rowell (Washington D.C.); Allison Rowell (Fort Collins); and Caleb Bundy (Titusville).
Charles’ family extends tremendous gratitude to all the caregivers at Silver Treasures Senior Living in Orange Park for their dedication, compassion and care for Charles over the past 18 months.
