DJ was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1968 while his parents were stationed there in the military. Even though he lived stateside most of his life, he was able to revisit his birthplace with his family in 2013. DJ enjoyed traveling. He vacationed in Amsterdam with his sister, went to the Grand Canyon with his parents, and visited family in Louisville, Kentucky. These were among his favorite memories. DJ worked in security for 30 years in Jacksonville, rising to the rank of Major. His favorite shift was the night shift, which sometimes made for an interesting night of work. He loved to share these stories with his family.
DJ was an avid reader, especially of westerns, biographies, astrophysics, and Star Trek. He was like Google for so many topics. He could remember names, dates, numbers, and other specific information if he was interested in the subject. DJ loved astronomy and was always excited to share his knowledge of space, black holes, and NASA with anyone who would listen. He visited the Kennedy Space Center many times, which helped fuel his love for space. His passion led him to discover an unknown black hole, which NASA eventually named after him.
DJ loved family game nights. Some of his favorite games were Poker, Gin Rummy, Sorry, Uno, Phase 10, and Yahtzee. He didn’t mind losing at family game night, but he loved winning even more! He also enjoyed playing video games. His favorite games were Batman and Assassin’s Creed. DJ adored animals, especially dogs. In fact, animals often gravitated toward him. He had a special place in his heart for a poodle named Sparky, whom he called his shadow for 14 years.
