Joanne graduated high school at the age of 16 and entered into nursing school at Georgia Baptist, where she was on the newsletter staff, played in piano recitals and proudly earned her three year nursing diploma. She married Walter T. Johnson on November 1955. Joanne had a long career as a registered nurse, even though she took off 20 years to raise her children. She worked in various settings, but she enjoyed most working (briefly) in a psychiatric ward and at the end of her career on private duty cases. She was a dedicated and meticulous nurse who felt the loss of patients deeply.
Joanne loved classical music in almost all forms, but she enjoyed playing it on a piano most of all. As luck would have it, world-renowned violinist Elmar Oliveria purchased a second home next door to her family when they lived in Vestal, New York. Joanne would spend as much time as possible sitting next to the window closest to his home listening the music he played while he practiced. Eventually, she and her daughter Joy would get his autograph when he performed in Palm Beach.
Joanne spent most of her life as a Southern Baptist; however, in her later years, she attended Methodist churches.
A special thank you to Trustbridge Hospice staff and to Courtyard Gardens staff (Jupiter, FL) for all you did to make Mom’s last few years and/or days as comfortable as possible.
She is survived by sister Shirley Hall; daughter Dawn Johnson; son Tom Johnson and daughter-in-law Danna Johnson; daughter Joy Kastanias and son-in-law Nicholas Kastanias; grandsons Austin Johnson and Brooks Johnson; granddaughters Shelby Johnson and Sophia Kastanias.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter T. Johnson.
