Born on May 31, 1928, in the Bronx, New York, Evelyn lived a remarkable life defined by compassion, conviction, adventure, and faith. A dedicated nurse for many decades, she traveled the world caring for others and ministering the Word of God wherever life called her. She never met a stranger for long, and she was known for speaking her mind honestly, loving fiercely, and living boldly.
Evelyn retired from nursing at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, and kept her license active until she was late into her 80’s.
Evelyn was the kind of woman who could comfort you, correct you, pray for you, and probably make you laugh all in the same conversation. She was spirited, independent, and unforgettable — a true spitfire with a servant’s heart.
She was preceded in death by her beloved sons, James Norman and Daniel Norman; her soulmate, Lee Wheeler; her brother, Edward Brown; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Brown.
She is survived by her deeply devoted daughter, Cynthia Norman (Tara), adopted daughter, Tammie Fyfe, of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter-in-law Nina Norman, granddaughter Marissa Ray (Jared), great grandson Weston from Palatka, Florida; and many additional family members and loved ones whose lives were touched by her strength, humor, faith, and generosity.
Though her friends and family mourn her loss deeply, they find comfort in knowing Evelyn spent her life exactly as she wished — helping others, sharing her faith, and never being afraid to say what she thought.
Her family will remember her not only for the lives she saved and the people she helped around the world, but also for her laughter, her fierce spirit, and the love she gave so freely.
