Evelyn P. Schumacher

March 18, 1952November 14, 2020

Evelyn Pitney Schumacher, age 68, of Jacksonville, Florida, went to her eternal home on November 14, 2020 after a courageous 30 month fight with glioblastoma. Evelyn was born on March 18, 1952 in Jacksonville, Florida to Charles and Laura Pitney. She graduated from Ribault High School in 1970 and went on later to graduate with her Master’s Degree in Nutrition from the University of Florida in 1996. She would go on to retire in 2019 from St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Evelyn had a career full of not only teaching but also encouraging and helping people with diabetes all throughout the state of Florida. From working with companies, to personal contract work, it was hard to hear the word “diabetes” without hearing “Evelyn Schumacher” to accompany it. Evelyn served on many boards including Diabetes Coalition, American Diabetes Association, ADA Camp JADA, ADA Expo, American Association of Diabetes Educators, and Jacksonville Association of Diabetes Educators where she was President, and presented at National Meetings.

Evelyn has been a member of Trinity Baptist Church since December 2009. She served on multiple medical missions to Dominica where she worked closely with a Pastor to help in their medical clinic and hospital and served those in the community with basic medical care. She rode Tour de Cure for ADA over 60 miles two years in a row, completed a marathon in Bermuda, walked at every ADA walk available and participated in almost every diabetes related event she could. The last two years she was able to participate in the National Brain Tumor walk for Glioblastoma. Evelyn was very active in her giving to others, and participated in the Sisterhood of Servants who coach and cultivate the lives of young at risk girls here and abroad.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her beloved son Joshua, brother-in-law J.R. Hanks, and parents Charles and Laura Pitney.

She is survived by her daughter Sara; step-daughter Melody Kennison; sister Sandra Hanks and brother Chuck Pitney (Jennifer); nieces Bea Hanks (Mike), Kara Holder (CJ), Jaime Marini (Dan) and Natalie (Tracy) Hoff; nephews Logan Pitney and Richard Lyons (Amanda); great nieces Kyla, Emma and Eva Morales Hanks and many, many other friends and family that she loved and cherished.

Family will receive visitors on Friday, November 20, 2020 from 6pm-8pm at The Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 11am at Trinity Baptist Church, 800 Hammond Blvd. Interment will follow at a later date at Riverside Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved son Joshua.

Evelyn loved flowers and loved giving to others. The family is accepting flowers, but should you rather donate to a cause close to her heart, a memorial fund has been set up through the Sisterhood of Servants in her name:

I will so miss lunches and special sharing with my dear friend, Evelyn. But, we are all so blessed to have a beautiful new Angel smiling down and watching over us.

Sarah, I am sorry about the passing of your mother Evelyn. She was a special treat to be around. She reached out to me and guided me with my diabetes and sign language class sharing. She loved "her" people and reached out to the deaf and hearing. Her laughter is still remembered as something to cherish. She will be missed.
Love, Martha Conn

Grace, dignity, and compassion! Truly an amazing woman and mother to more than just her children. She will be greatly missed but certainly not forgotten; as her immensely loving heart continues in her extraordinary daughter! Love you Momma Shoe.

I love you so much and I will always miss you. I know that you are at peace with Josh and with Bompie. I know that you will watch over me and help me on the path I am to be on. I will always remember when I would stay at your house on the weekends when I was a child so go to Sunday school with you. I remember all the fun times we had and maybe will have in the future. This is not the end my Aga. Now go fly in the heavens and rest. I believe you are one of the strongest women I have ever met and am glade that you are my Aga.
Love you to the moon and back,
Kyla Morales Hanks
