

He was employed by the Department of the Treasury, U.S. Secret Service and was Special Agent in Charge of the Jacksonville Office from 1968 – 1977. In the Army during WWII, he became interested in criminal investigations and began his career shortly after graduation from Auburn University in 1952. His career spanned 25 years and included protecting seven U.S. Presidents. He authored a book “Special Agent in Charge” with Knopf Printing (Online Binding).
Married for 66 years to Marilou Shubert, they had five children. Mr. Guthrie is predeceased by his daughter, Jill Marie Buser (husband - Steve) from Jacksonville, FL. He is survived by his wife, Marilou Guthrie; son, Lane Guthrie (wife – Sally) from Greenville, SC; daughter, Karen Albury (husband – William) from Alexander City, AL; daughter, Brenda Guthrie from Tallahassee, FL; and son, Kent Guthrie of Jacksonville, FL. He also has eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was active in Kiwanis and in the Association of Former Agents of the U.S. Secret Service.
Visitation will be Friday, April 29th, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Hardage Giddens Chapel Hills, 850 St. John’s Bluff Road, N., Jacksonville, FL 32225. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm in the chapel, interment to follow in Chapel Hills Memory Gardens.
