Dr. George Mitchell was born August 5,1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Reverend Charles and Hazel Mitchell. His father established Mitchell Memorial Church in the Corner Gardens area of Detroit. George was the oldest of 4 boys. George is predeceased in death by his parents Charles and Hazel, and his brothers, John and Charles Mitchell. George spent his teenage years in Columbia, Missouri with his Auth Ethel Miller and three cousins Mable, Cannie, and Albert.
George was the loving and devoted husband to Mae Mitchell. Their loving union lasted for 65 years. A Brother and an Uncle, George loved his family and frequently visited them during his vacation time. George honorably served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army.
George had a passion for education and learning. He was an educator for all levels. Following his love of learning, he received his B.S. Degree from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, an M.S. Degree and PhD from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He retired as the Dean of Students from Oakland Community College. Upon his retirement George and Mae relocated to Palm Bay Florida where they resided until his health failed and he moved to Jacksonville to be cared for by family.
George loved the Lord and exhibited that love through his singing. He began singing in college at Lincoln University. For many years George was part of the Brevard Community Chorus at the Maxwell King Center in Melbourne, Florida. He also sang with the Detroit Post Office Male Chorus. His love of singing gave him the opportunity to travel the world singing with the Brevard Community Chorus. Never missing an opportunity to lift his voice in praise to God, he sang in a quartet at his church home, Grace Bible Sanctuary Church of Palm Bay.
George departed this earthly life on August 17, 2021. He leaves to cherish many loving memories; his devoted wife Mae, his brother: Clyde Mitchell and a host of family and friends.
