George was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 21, 1938. Growing up, he played stickball, would hang out outside Ebbets Field hoping to get in to see the Dodgers, spent time in Prospect Park, played softball with the Police Athletic League, and would hitchhike to upstate New York towards the Baseball Hall of Fame. He attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and Manhattan School of Aviation and was very devoted to helping his family. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for seven years and was honorably discharged in 1963. He spent much of his working life in the aerospace field, working on military aircrafts before moving into production/scheduling at Grumman Aerospace in Calverton, where he spent 25 years working.
George really loved music and used his John Travolta-like dance moves to meet and captivate lovely (and later, devoted wife) Evelyn. They married in 1963 and lived in Port Jefferson Station together while raising their children, Jeffrey and Brian. They eventually relocated the family to Florida, where he and his family enjoyed the peace and tranquility of a lakefront home in Deltona for many years. Retirement was filled with the simple things George enjoyed most: fishing in the lake behind the house, landscaping, barbecuing, softball, and relaxing by the pool with his family. He loved softball and continued playing until the age of 74, a testament to his energy and love of the game.
George and Evelyn later moved to their "beach paradise" in Atlantic Beach when their children were grown. They embraced condo living together and the simpler pace that came with it. George often lived by the words, “one day at a time.” He enjoyed taking care of his ditties (little things) around their home, laughing and loving with Evelyn, visiting family, fishing when he could, having a good meal at a waterfront restaurant, and listening to music—especially doo-wop!
But, the greatest part of George's life was always his family. As a husband, he shared a lifetime of memories and love with his wife, Evelyn, married 63 years. As a brother and father, he was someone they could always count on. He loved, encouraged, joked, and was simply there. As a grandfather and great-grandfather, he brought that same laughter, warmth and affection to the generations that followed him. Everyone will remember his stories, his humor, his music, his love of fishing and softball, his enjoyment of the water, his vibrant personality, and most of all: the love he gave so freely.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn; siblings: Robert (Nancy), Marilyn (Larry), Catherine, and Gerald; children: Brian (Amy) and Jeffrey (Amber); grandchildren Alex (Kristen), Kendra (Kyle), Grace (Colby), Kate (Sean), Leasja, and Gianna; great-grandchildren Bryce and Baelee; as well as extended family and dear friends. He is joined in eternity with his parents
Nathaniel and Mary Rose and his siblings Geraldine Rose and Virginia Fiorello with her husband David.
George leaves behind much more than memories. He leaves behind the love he gave, the laughter he shared, the lessons he taught, and pieces of himself in every generation of his family. He will be missed more than words can say.
George, you taught us to take life one day at a time. We will carry your love, your laughter, your humor, and your spirit with us for the rest of our lives.
You were deeply loved. You will always be remembered and be a part of us.
