

She graduated from Monticello High School. She worked in the Florida state government for 50 years. She worked in the Florida Legislature, the Purchasing division, and finished her career as an accountant in the General Services division. The last ten years of her life were spent in Jacksonville, Florida with her niece, Pallie Washil, who was also her caregiver. She had another caregiver, without whom she would not have had the quality of life that kept her going for ten years. Nakiesha Haven was God’s blessing to Gertrude and her niece. Gertrude succumbed after ten years from dementia. She was strong in will and physical strength until the end. May she find eternal rest and peace.
Gertrude is survived by her niece, Pallie McManus Washil, of Jacksonville, FL and her niece, Ann Clarke, of Tallahassee, FL.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Hamilton Monroe Mash, her sister Pallie Mae Mash McManus, brother-in-law W.T. McManus, and her nephew George Arthur Mash.
Friends who are left to cherish fond memories of Gertrude include Betty and Gene Goodman of Whigham, GA, Betty Roberson of Huntsville, AL, Joyce Herndon of Tallahassee, FL, Ruby Gray of Monticello, FL, friend and caregiver Hedy Diley of Jacksonville, FL, Sandi and Dave Wehrmeyer of St. Augustine, FL and Lovine Dixon, Suzannie Aird, and Jordelle Williams of Jacksonville, FL.
Thanks to Dr. David Pirrung for the wonderful care he gave Gertrude. In her words, “There goes ‘The Man’”. Thanks also to Dan Palmieri, ARNP, who cared for Gertrude when Dr. Pirrung retired. Dr. Michael Stephens also helped in Gertrude’s care. Thanks also to everyone in the office of Dr. Stephens for their care and concern for Gertrude’s well-being. Thanks also go to Community Hospice for the loving care they showed Gertrude in the last four days of her life.
A visitation will be held at 12pm, Friday February 26, 2016, with a funeral service to follow at 1pm, at Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32205. Burial will follow these services at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32205.
