Ed was born on March 1, 1955, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Christeena (Altman) and Thomas Sheppard Rushing. Growing up, Ed had a love for sports that continued throughout his life. He was an avid fan of Florida State University football, basketball, and baseball, as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly fishing and gardening.
Ed was a devoted member and one of the founding members of Agape’ Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a Deacon. He deeply cherished his church family and dedicated countless hours to the maintenance, care, and upkeep of the church. His commitment to his faith and his willingness to serve were an important part of who he was.
Ed never met a stranger and had a natural ability to make those around him laugh. He had a way of making people feel welcome and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. He especially looked forward to family trips and adventures, cherishing the time spent together and the memories made along the way.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. He treasured his relationships with his surviving siblings and always looked forward to family gatherings and conversations over the phone.
Above all, Ed took immense pride in his family. He cherished his wife, Catherine Rushing; his children, Phillip and Maranda Rushing; and his two beloved grandchildren, Mateo and Ruby Velazquez. His family was a source of great joy, love, and pride throughout his life.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Agape’ Baptist Church, 3880 Old Middleburg Road S., Jacksonville, Florida. A light luncheon and time of fellowship will follow the service.
