Harry Lee McLendon (Harry), 76, passed away on May 24, 2015 at his home on the Westside of Jacksonville surrounded by those who loved him most. He was born in Jacksonville on September 28, 1939 to Robert Floyd McLendon and Marie Jones McLendon who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Olive McLendon McLane and his beloved brother R.F. McLendon. Harry was a proud member of the U.S.M.C. and served for 8 years. Harry’s career in construction and later as an electrician spanned over 40 years. He was always recognized as an expert in his field, the quality of his work was known in the industry, and he particularly loved being able to outwork men half his age until his retirement. He loved gardening and growing things, animals, spending time with his wife and family, reading, and watching old war movies or documentaries at every chance. He was a lifelong learner and was perhaps one of the only people to actually read through (many times) his entire set of World Book Encyclopedias. His conversion to Christ later in life was a great source of comfort to Harry when diagnosed with bladder cancer late in 2014. His faith continued to support him and bring him peace even in the last moments of his life. He was a member of Rolling Hills Baptist Church. Harry was the best of men. He loved, supported, encouraged and provided well for his family and was deeply cherished by them all. To family, he was simply Papa, a source of gentle strength known to be quick to hear and slow to speak. Harry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Obie Marie, his two children: son John McLendon and his wife Marlene, and daughter Charlotte Baker, his grandchildren: Travis McLendon and his wife Mindy, David McLendon, Price Baker and his fianceé Ashlyn, and Eva Baker and his precious great grandchildren: Morgan, Payton, Mia and Abby. Funeral services will be held at Hardage-Giddens Town and Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. Thursday, May 28, 2015, 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you remember Harry by making a donation to Community Hospice. It would please Harry for us to support the work they do for families in our community and to recognize the help they were to us during this difficult time.
