

Henry Bacchus Stewart Jr., 92, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away at his home on July 17, 2021. Son of the late Henry B. Stewart Sr. and Janie L. Stewart, he was born September 16, 1929, in Cedar Springs, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his brother, Oscar Stewart; sisters, and Marcie S. Leggett; and son, Stanley L. Stewart (Shirley).
Henry attended Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Florida and later received his degree in business administration from Jacksonville University. Upon graduating from Jackson he began his career with Seaboard Railroad, which later became CSX Railroad, where he worked for 40 years before retiring. While working for CSX, Henry was drafted into the United States Army and served his country for three years during the Korean War. On January 30, 1951, Henry married the love of his life, Dessie Louise Highsmith of Jacksonville, Florida, and they were married for 70 years. There was nothing more important to Henry than his wife, and they enjoyed traveling, teaching Sunday school, and spending time together with family.
Henry was an active member of the Avondale United Methodist Church for the last 66 years, and upon retirement began giving back through mission trips to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. He took up running later in life and enjoyed racing in the Jacksonville River Run 15K. Henry was proud of his heritage with membership in the Jamestown Society, Huguenots, Sons of the Confederacy and several others. Henry lived life to the fullest and always enjoyed gathering with family at either their house or the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club where he was a member for 45 years.
His loving wife, Louise H. Stewart and son, Craig A. Stewart, survive Henry. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Brian L. Stewart (Erica), Christopher A. Stewart (Wesleigh), and Adam L. Stewart (Madison); and seven great-grandchildren: Mackenzie Black, Gabriel Stewart, Cooper Stewart, Banks Stewart, Mozelle Stewart, Quinn Stewart, and Maxine Stewart and Henry sister Karleen S. Daniels.
A memorial service will be held at the Avondale United Methodist Church on July 31, 2021 at 10:00 AM.
