

Cooney was born on September 5th, 1949, to parents Billy and Gracie Anderson in Jacksonville, Florida. After high school, he proudly served his country after being drafted into the Marine Corp. He answered to the call of duty with honor, dedication and embodying the values of service and sacrifice in Vietnam. Following his time serving his country, Cooney built a successful career at Clear Channel, where he worked as a leader man, crane operator, and welder. Known for his strong work ethic and dedication, he took great pride in his craft, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and friends in the industry.
Cooney dedicated 47 years of hard work to Clear Channel, building a career he took pride in. He deeply loved his family and was a loyal and caring friend to many. A proud marine, he cherished his time and service and carried that spirit of the Marine core values of honor, courage and commitment throughout his life. He had a passion for working on his cars, watching Nascar races, attending gun shows and taking his boat out on the creek. In recent years, he grew a likeness for following golf. Thanksgiving was one of his favorite times of the year, as he enjoyed the food and the joy of having family together. He also had a sweet tooth, especially for skittle jelly beans. His love and his hugs will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. He was kind, genuine, and always faithful, Semper Fi.
He is survived by his sister Gail Bass (Jerry), his children Terri (Kevin), Amanda (Johnny), Joshua (Brittany), Brandon, Brandi (David), Audra (Eric). Grandchildren Lindsey Hope (Brian), Breyana, Gracie, Devin, Peyton, Brycen, Kayden, Kynleigh, Kallie, Shelby, Kylie, Brendon, Scarlett. Great grandkids Colin and Isla.
We would like to extend a special thank you to his friend, brother, neighbor Josh Jones who was like a son to him. Your kindness, care, and unwavering support meant the world to him, and we are forever grateful for the love and friendship you shared.
Towards the later part of his life, he became friends with Jeremy Cody, and they grew a strong bond and friendship, and through their relationship it really exemplified the way Cooney made people feel appreciated and respected. Thank you for being a great friend to him and helping him with his projects.
He is preceded in death by his parents Billy and Gracie Anderson, his grandmother Nellie Anderson, his sister Sylvia Smith, his brother Paul McClain and his beloved dog Snookie.
Immediately following the service on Thursday, we will have a Celebration of Life at Lannie Road Baptist Church, 5998 Lannie Rd. Jacksonville, Fl 32218.
A visitation for Ira will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. A graveside will occur Thursday, February 27, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
