

With heavy hearts, the family of James William Griner Sr., affectionately known as Jim, announces his peaceful passing on August 11, 2024, in Melbourne, Florida. At the age of 85, Jim's life was a testament to love, strength, and unwavering integrity. Born on February 20, 1939, in Montgomery, Alabama, he was the cherished son of the late Moses William Griner Sr. and MaeBelle Little Griner.
Jim dedicated his life to service, both to his family and his community. After graduating from the Jacksonville Police Academy on October 14, 1961, he served the people of Jacksonville in various capacities with honor and distinction. He worked as a Detective in the Robbery Division, a Sergeant in the Crime Analysis Unit, a Helicopter and Fixed-Wing Pilot for the Air Hawk 5 Unit, and concluded his career as a Road Division Sergeant, retiring in 1995.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was a man of deep passions. He was a proud Shriner and Mason, and his love for the outdoors was evident in his pursuits as a hunter and fisherman. A classic car enthusiast with an award-winning 1939 Chevy coupe, he was also a talented craftsman and artist who brought creativity and care to everything he did. Jim's love of learning was lifelong, as he was an avid reader who never stopped seeking knowledge.
Jim's family was the heart of his world. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses William Griner, Sr. and MaeBelle Little Griner; his first wife, Margaret Annette Turpen; his beloved son, James William Griner Jr.; his dear daughter, Bambi Ellen Griner; his beloved granddaughter, Kelsi; and his brother, Moses William Griner, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Jean Sheffield Griner. His legacy continues through his devoted daughter, Tammy Marie Griner; his treasured grandchildren, Kyle Zack, Taylor Oneal (and wife Danielle Jones), and James Lansing; and his adored great-granddaughters, Allyssa Marie Oneal, Lyric Layne Sparks, and Peyton Zack. Jim also leaves behind his stepdaughter, Tina Newcomb, along with a large, extended family and many friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Jim's life was defined by his nobility, integrity, and boundless empathy. He was a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. To know Jim was to be touched by his kindness, his strength, and his unwavering sense of duty. His legacy of character, love, and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A visitation for James will be held Monday, August 19, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. A committal service will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.
