

John Richard Thomas, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026. He was born on July 21, 1947, in Jacksonville, Florida. John was the son of the late Paul and Barbara Thomas.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life JoAnn Thomas, brothers, Paul Thomas (Sherry) and Bobby Thomas, as well as his cherished nephew, Alan Thomas.
John and JoAnn first met in kindergarten at Wesley United Methodist Church and began dating in the 11th grade. Their lifelong romance blossomed into a beautiful marriage that lasted 56 years.
John was a devoted father to Jennifer Godbold, Jason Thomas (Melissa), and Jill Jones (Brian). He was a proud and loving GeeGee to Jenna Clements (David) , Tyler Godbold (Kira) , Jace Thomas, and Jacob Thomas. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his family and cheering on their accomplishments and activities. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Mia Clements and Olivia Godbold. John also shared a special bond with Chris Godbold who he considered a son and enjoyed going to the races with.
John dedicated more than 47 years of service to Flowers Baking Company, where he built lasting friendships and took great pride in his work. His strong work ethic, loyalty, and commitment were hallmarks of both his professional and personal life.
John was a proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville. The friendships he formed there remained important throughout his life.
John was a faithful member of Shindler Drive Baptist Church, where he found fellowship, encouragement, and a strong sense of community throughout the years.
Outside of work, John loved spending time with his family, whether attending ballgames, celebrating special occasions, traveling, or simply enjoying time together. He especially enjoyed trips to the beach and mountains with his wife. He was an avid sports fan and devoted supporter of the Atlanta Braves and Florida Gators.
John lived a life centered on faith, family, and creating memories with those he loved. Whether cheering from the stands at a ballgame, attending family gatherings, or spending time with lifelong friends.
John’s legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and the many friends whose lives he touched. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him forever.
The family will be receiving friends and family on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. and the service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Riverside Event Pavilion at 1373 Memorial Park Road Jacksonville, Florida 32205. The committal service will follow at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
