

Born on September 9, 1935, Lawton grew up in Dodge County, Georgia, before later settling in Florida. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, a commitment that reflected his sense of duty and dedication. A faithful Christian, Lawton was a devoted member of the North Jacksonville Church of God, where his faith remained an important part of his life.
Throughout his life, he found joy in working with cars, creating beautiful landscapes, and spending time with those he loved. Above all else, Lawton cherished his family and took great pride in the lives of his children and loved ones.
Lawton was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean M. Williams.
He is survived by his daughter, Vicki R. Short, her husband, Billy Short, and their son, Patrick Short; his son, Paul Hand, and Paul's children, Nicholl Hand, Jennifer Hand-Marcial, Laura Hand, and Emma Hand; his brother, Bobby Williams; and his sister, Betty Smith. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Lawton will be remembered for his kindness, dedication to his family, steadfast faith, and appreciation for life's simple pleasures. His love, wisdom, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His legacy lives on in the family he loved so greatly and in the many memories shared by those fortunate enough to have known him.

The family will receive friends at the Hardage-Giddens Riverside Event Pavilion, 1373 Memorial Park Road, Jacksonville, FL 32205, on Friday, June 12, 2026 beginning at 12 pm and going until service time at 2 pm. Burial will follow at Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park.
