Mr. Leonard Weepie C. Wenzel

Leonard Charles Wenzel (Weepie) passed away on March 22. Born in Chicago, Illinois on July 22, 1931 to Lee Christopher Wenzel and Edna Trute Wenzel, his family moved to Jacksonville when he was 4 years old. He went to local schools and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1951.

After his graduation from Lee, he joined the Marines with several good friends. He served in the A Company 1st Battalion 5th Marine Division during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart. At the time of his death, he was a member of the First Marine Division.

Leonard retired in 1993 from Gerber Products after 37 years of employment.

He was an original member of the Jacksonville Charter Revision Committee during the consolidation of Duval County. He was also a member of West Duval Jaycees. He was active in the American Legion Post 137, serving as Chairman of the Board for several terms. He was also a member of the German American Club, and a long time member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church.

While his children were growing up, he was a baseball and basketball coach for the Lake Shore Athletic Association.

An avid golfer, he was a member of the Hyde Park Golf Club, the American Legion Golf Club, and a director of JAGA.

Survivors include 2 sons, David Wenzel (Jane) of Winter Haven and Douglas Wenzel (Angela) of Flagler Beach; a daughter, Christie Jones (Clark) of Jacksonville; a sister, Laverne LaMotte, 7 grandchildren; several nieces and 1 nephew. He was predeceased by his wife, Claire, and sister, Leona Marlowe.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 25, from 6-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held, Friday, March 26, at 2:00 PM at St. Matthews Catholic Church with Father Luke McLaughlin as the Celebrant.

Interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.
