Over the course of her 91 years, the ways of the world changed but she stayed true to her nature – energetic, stubborn (in the best way) and steadfastly independent. With almost a century under her belt, she carried with her signature zest, spunkiness and sharp memory until the day she passed. Her family is grateful that her wit and personality never waned – she was just too strong for that!
Mary Jewell was proud of her education – earning her GED and enrolling in typing writing classes on her own volition. Some of her greatest stories come from her time working at the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, Inc (A&P), making her family laugh as they pictured factory line mishaps like those featured on, I Love Lucy. Her passions included sewing – including making hand sewn Cabbage Patch dolls, caring for her family and dogs, camping with her granddaughter, card games (poker aka "pokah"), worship and attending Baldwin Assembly of God.
Mary Jewell survived by her daughter, Candy Maurais and son in law, Mark Maurais; grandchildren, Lauren, Randy, Tracy, and Gabrielle; nieces, Linda, Brenda, Janice, Wanda, and Vickey – to all of whom she served as “favorite Aunt”. Mary Jewell often shared excitement about reuniting with her family in heaven – including parents, Katie Lou & Jacob Elliott; son, Harry Nelson; sisters, Virginia, Lucille, Doris, Audrey, Sarah; and her husband, Andrew Carlson.
A visitation for Mary will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM with Funeral Services to follow at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
