Mary Joyce Mercado

Mary Joyce Mercado, 82, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family on October 4, 2023. She was born in Argyle, Georgia, on February 12, 1941, to the late Lloyd Cox and Willie Mae Sailor.

On January 26, 1973 Joyce married Generato S. Mercado after a lengthy and loving courtship. Gee’s accomplishments throughout their 50 year marriage, can be attributed to her unwavering support and sacrifices. Their love prevailed through second jobs, late night study sessions, and multiple Naval tours.

Growing up as the oldest of 3 siblings, she carried her nurturing spirit with her her whole life. That spirit reflected in her home, her cooking, her plants and her family. Anything she touched flourished as a result of her love and passion.

Family was the most important part of her life. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was “Mema” to her grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in Heaven by her father Lloyd, her mother, Willie Mae, her sister, Janice, her daughter, Brenda, and her great grandson Jaden.

She is survived by her husband Gee, her daughter,Theresa and her husband Don, her son Darryl and his wife Tammy, her son James, her daughter Cheryl, her son Roland and his wife Tammy, her daughter Kimberly and her husband Allen, and her daughter Jennifer and her husband Roy; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Mary was, and still is immensely loved and her devoted spirit will be missed dearly.

A visitation for Mary will be held Monday, October 16, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, October 17, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 8523 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32221. A committal service will occur Tuesday, October 17, 2023 from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
