
Born on October 25, 1948 in New York City, Mike and his family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in 1949 where he remained until his passing. He was a devoted son to Adolph (Al) and Frances (Fran) Pelton Horowitz before their passing in 2008 (Al) and 2018 (Fran).
Mike earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972 and the Master of Arts in Teaching in 1977, both from Jacksonville University. In 1983, Mike earned a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Florida. Mike taught special education in Duval County Public Schools for nearly 30 years. He taught at Biltmore Elementary and subsequently moved to Merrill Road Elementary School where he was named Teacher of The Year (2005) and later retired. He was loved and respected by his students, and his guidance and passion for teaching had a significant impact on their lives.
Mike was known for his highly inquisitive nature, and for his love and devotion to his family including furry family members. Mike was fascinated by wildlife and supported animal welfare causes, especially those benefitting alligators, turtles, and sea life. He enjoyed many cruises and was an articulate communicator who took great pleasure in advising and supporting family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by his brother Lonnie Horowitz and aunts Janet Pelton Miller and Dr. Shirley Pelton Engelhardt Ballard Steele. Mike is survived by his Uncle Seymour Mike Pelton of Georgia, Aunt Phyllis Pelton Bassett of Illinois, a niece, and several cousins.
Mike is under the care of Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home. Services are private for family and close friends.
