Nancy grew up in Akron where she attended Woodland United Methodist Church, graduated from Buchtel High School, and raised five children. Once her children reached school age, Nancy earned her BA in Education from the University of Akron. She was an active leader of Girl Scout Troop 811 where she had an impact on many girls from West Akron. An avid camper, hiker, and song leader, she enjoyed participating in telling stories and singing songs around the campfire.
After a short teaching career, Nancy found work at AHEAD (Akron’s House Extending Aid on Drugs) where she made lifelong friends among her co-workers. Nancy moved to Edgewater, Florida in the early 80s to be closer to her mother. Once she moved to central Florida, she found an extended family among the local theatre scene. She was a lifetime member of The Little Theater of New Smyrna Beach where she contributed her talents as an actress and director as well as stage manager and lighting & sound technician. In addition, Nancy was an enthusiastic audience member and could be seen enjoying many performances throughout the region.
Nancy was a charter member of the Community Unitarian Universalist Church in New Smyrna Beach where she once served as Service Leader. She retired in 2005 from the State of Florida and didn’t waste any time exploring her hobbies. She was a voracious reader and lifelong student always curious to learn new things. Nancy was an avid crafter with her specialty being tabletop Christmas trees. Her trees can be found in homes from Ohio to Florida and Alaska to New Jersey. Nancy was always giving homemade gifts which have become treasured mementos for her friends and family.
One of Nancy’s favorite hobbies was genealogy. She began tracing her roots in the 70s and her efforts continued to her last months. Some claims to fame include being related to Abraham Lincoln as 4th cousins five times removed and being related to America the Beautiful author Katharine Lee Bates.
Passing on October 22, 2024, Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Carroll E. Flee and Marjorie Grubb, her sister Betty Wixson and brother Robert M. Flee, a son-in-law, two grandsons, a niece, four nephews, and the father of her children Roger C. McCormick.
She leaves behind her five children Kathy Cline (Alan), Tim McCormick (Debbie), Carol Wicks (Danny), Karen McCormick, and Tari Bergoine (John), 17 grandchildren and 27 (soon to be 29) great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to count.
No service is planned at this time. Family will celebrate Nancy’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity as a memorial to Nancy.
