
Mr. Tolar was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Cleveland, USS Grand Canyon and USS Richard E. Kraus. He was a member and served as the commander of VFW Posts in Waterloo, Illinois. He was a member of the VFW Posts in Springfield, Illinois; Kansas City, Kansas and Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Mr. Tolar retired from the U.S. Postal Service after a 42 year career in government transportation contracting. During retirement he volunteered as a tutor in the Learn to Read program and was a charter member, past president and past secretary of the North Florida Writers. Mr. Tolar wrote and published three fictional books and a book of short stories. He also critiqued and edited the work of many aspiring writers.
Mr. Tolar was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Jewell “Bug” (Schmitt) Tolar; his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Harry Tolar, Jr. and Hazel M. Tolar, sister, 1st Lt. Doris Tolar, U.S. Air Force and niece, Mary Kay Braley.
Survivors include his sister, Mary Ann Conaway, Florissant, MO., nieces and nephews, Theresa (Clyde) Ruble of Bolingbrook, IL; Peggy Grant of Anna, IL; Thomas and Kenneth Tolar both of Pulaski, IL; Larissa Stillman and Stephen Conaway both of Florissant, MO. Mr. Tolar was blessed with 10 great-nieces and nephews and 12 great-great-nieces and nephews.
Services and Interment will be held at the National Cemetery in Mounds City, IL.
