He was born October 14, 1939, to Norman L. and Bernice Going of Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Mr. Going graduated from Stillwater High School, and later from Oklahoma State University
with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism, then graduate school at the University of
Florida in Gainesville.
Mr. Going subsequently worked in various editorial positions with the Orlanda Sentinel-Star,
Florida Alligator, and (Jacksonville) Florida Times-Union. He left The Times-Union in the mid-
1980s for the "wonderful world" of public relations. "Not one of my brighter decisions," he said
later.
In the mid-1970s, Mr. Going received a direct commission in the U.S. Navy and served at a
number of duty stations as a public affairs officer: Pensacola Naval Air Station; Norfolk Naval
Station; and Jacksonville NAS; where he retired in 1991 as a lieutenant commander after 20
years of naval service.
Mr.Going leaves behind his beloved wife of 45 years, Sharyn', and son, Christian. In addition,
he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Marijean Going of Houston, Texas.
Mr. Going has requested no service, and asks friends and family to remember him as he was
before chemotherapy: a guy who loved his family, a multitude of house pets, his feral cat
colony, his muscle cars, Oklahoma State University, the Florida Gators and the Jacksonville
Jaguars.
In remembrance, donations may be made to The Animal Rescue and Adoption Agency, Inc.,
13976 Denton Road, Jacksonville, FL 32226.
