Our beloved Richard L. Gills, age 83, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013 in Jacksonville, FL. Richard was born February 18, 1930 in Besoco, West Virginia to Ray and Hazel (Smith) Gills. Richard proudly served in the Army/Air Force Corps during the Korean Conflict. Richard owned and operated Duval Container Company. He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church since joining in 1969 when he moved from Bluefield, West Virginia where he was comptroller for many years at Superior Sterling Company. Richard was a Director of the mission board, Christians in Alliance and dedicated a great deal of time to missions work. Richard was blessed by two wonderful marriages, the first to Betty Willoughby until her death in 1989. Their surviving children are son Richard Keith Gills, Sr. (Deborah), grandchildren Richard K. Gills, Jr. and Summer C. Gills; son, Gary Lee Gills; one daughter, Connie Lee Vinson (Earl) and granddaughter Kayla J. Vinson. He is survived by his second wife, Elaine Robinson, daughter Charissa Jane Spinks and grandchildren Drucilla W. Spinks and Xander C. Spinks. He is also survived by one brother, Douglas Gills (Bonnie) of West Virginia and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one sister, Alma Collins. Family will receive friends and family from 1:00 to 1:30 pm, Wednesday, 24 April, at First Baptist Church of Ortega, 4865 Roosevelt Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32210. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm at the church. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 pm with Brother John Blount officiating. Interment will follow services in Jacksonville Memory Gardens in Orange Park, FL. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
