Born in Newark, Delaware to Cindy Wood Lewis and Richard Kent Lewis, Rich attended Westminster Choir College and studied Organ Performance and Choral Conducting. Playing the organ was a passion of Rich from the time he was a small boy, and continued until his passing. Married for 13 years to Jonathan Lewis, they enjoyed taking trips to Walt Disney World often, as Rich described it as his “happy place.” In addition, Rich enjoyed going to the beach, fine dining, and playing video games.
The organist for Riverside Park United Methodist Church for over 10 years, Rich had a deep passion for playing not only for worship services, but also putting on annual concerts, such as his Halloween Spooktacular. Rich had been a professional organist since his teens and was blessed enough to pursue his passion for the rest of his life. He had wonderful professional and personal relationships with the staff, choir, and parishioners at Riverside Park United Methodist Church, and felt very fortunate for the welcoming and supportive environment he worked in.
Rich was proceeded in death by his mother Cindy, his sister Mary-Beth Hetzler, his grandparents Bill and Katherine Lewis and Dot and Bill “Wood” Wood. He is survived by his loving husband Jonathan Lewis of Jacksonville, father Richard “Kent” Lewis Sr. of Jacksonville, and brother David Lewis of Newark, Delaware. Emily Knight, Pastor at Riverside Park United Methodist Church frequently was by Rich’s side during his fight with cancer and was a source of strength and compassion or Rich.
A memorial is being planned at Riverside Park United Methodist Church, with details to be announced later. A musical scholarship will be established in Rich’s honor, and in lieu of flowers, donations to the scholarship are requested instead.
